The Board of Governors oversees Défi Innovation Estrie. It does so by ensuring that the work and activities of Défi Innovation Estrie is in line to the needs and realities of businesses in the Eastern Townships.

Jacques Beauvais

Vice-principal for research, innovation and entrepreneurship

Université de Sherbrooke

Professor Jacques Beauvais has been vice-rector for research at the Université de Sherbrooke since 2007. Over the course of his scientific career, he was at the head of several research clusters, including the Centre d’excellence en génie de l’information.

He is the author or co-author of six U.S. patents and more than fifty scientific articles. He has contributed to the education of hundreds of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students. He also sits on numerous committees, notably the board of the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies.

Nicolas Bombardier

Nicolas Bombardier holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Concurrent Engineering as well as a Master’s of Business Administration from the Université de Sherbrooke. For 11 years, he worked in various research and development centres for Bombardier Recreational Products before joining Verbom, a family business where he holds the title of Director of R&D for the plants in Valcourt and in France as well as a seat on the board. Verbom specializes in shaping sheet metal as well as high value-added assembly services.

Lise Compagna has a background in mechanical engineering and holds a degree in business administration. President of Waterville Woodcraft Inc. since 1994, she is also very involved in the region’s development and participates in a number of activities aimed at economic development in the Eastern Townships. In fact, in addition to her involvement with Défi Innovation Estrie’s Board of Governors, she is Co-president of the “Créneau ACCORD de la transformation du bois d’apparence et composite” and served on the board of the “Centre de productique intégrée du Québec (CPIQ)” for several years.

Jean-Marc Gagnon - Attraction Inc.

Jean-Marc Gagnon is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Attraction Inc., a family-owned company that was founded 28 years ago. His business is located in Lac Drolet in the Eastern Townships and employs more than 75 employees. Jean-Marc Gagnon serves as a member of the “Table de Concertation de la Mode et du Vêtement du Québec” and is also a member of the “Groupement des chefs d’entreprise du Québec”. On two occasions he has led his company to win the title of being one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies.

Jean de Lafontaine

NGC Aerospace Ltd.

Originally from Sherbrooke, Jean de Lafontaine graduated from the Royal Military College with a degree in Engineering Physics and received his doctorate in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Toronto.

He worked for the Canadian government in the development of a remote-sensing satellite. He was also an engineer for the European Space Agency in the Netherlands and the Japanese Space Agency near Tokyo. Jean de Lafontaine returned to Canada in 1996 where he became a professor of Electrical Engineering at the Université de Sherbrooke. He is also the president and founder of NGC Aerospace Ltd., a company specializing in guidance, navigation, and control software design for satellites.

Josée Fortin has been the Director General of Sherbrooke Innopole since August 2013. She previously held various positions at the heart of organizations dedicated to economic development as well as with several private businesses.

Holding a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the Université Laval, she has served on the board of numerous organizations dedicated to economic development and innovation. She is also certified as a corporate director (administratrice de société certifiée – ASC).
